![]() ![]() The first objection criticizes Descartes for not rejecting the images of all bodies as delusive all he did was pretend that he was doing so in order to reach his conclusion that he is a thinking thing. The original sentences are marked with * sign, except in the geometrical argument on God’s existence and the soul’s distinctness of the body. This is also why I simply shortened his geometrical argument instead of paraphrasing it. He has been asked by his critics to write out his arguments in geometrical fashion, and after some objection obliges to their request.īecause some of the premises and sentences, especially in the synthesis, are of such a nature that they cannot be paraphrased without them losing their original meaning, I decided copy them without any alteration. It’s quite a long read, and although much of Descartes’s replies have already been explained in the first two meditations, it’s the last reply which carries most weight.
